Some years ago at CES 2014, Samsung demonstrated a prototype TV special. Thanks to a special mechanism at the rear, this TV set could be used as both a straight and curved screen. This mechanism ensured that the housing is thicker than a regular model. This will undoubtedly have been one of the reasons why this prototype was never put on the market.
However, Samsung is still busy refining this technology in the background. The Korean electronics manufacturer has filed a patent for a television screen that can bend forward and backward.
Samsung flexible OLED television bends forward and backward
On November 19, 2019, the USPTO (the United States Patent and Trademark Office) granted Samsung Electronics a patent for a ‘method and terminal for reproducing content’.
Samsung Electronics filed a patent for a flexible OLED TV screen that can be used in a flat and a curved state. In addition, the television can bend backward – for the moments the TV is off. Samsung will unveil this television at CES 2020?
The flexible OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) display panel can be deformed using a drive device and a pair of deformation guides. The television screen can bend forward and backward. The Samsung TV has a narrow standard and there is also a support panel on the back. A loudspeaker module is installed on both sides of the screen, which is also rotatable.
When the TV is off, the screen automatically bends backward, so you cannot see the support panel at the rear. This should contribute to a beautiful aesthetic look. As soon as the television is switched on, it can be used flat or forward.
It is certainly not inconceivable that this Samsung television will be exhibited at CES 2020. Samsung and other TV manufacturers are showing their latest innovations at this trade show for consumer electronics. For example, during CES 2019, the Korean manufacturer introduced two large 4K Micro LED TVs and a series of new Lifestyle TV models.
A TV that can change, change everything
However, there is another reason why we believe that this television could very well make its entrance on CES 2020. On December 18, 2019, Samsung Electronics registered a remarkable trademark in Great Britain at the UK IPO and in America at the UK USPTO. It is about the name ‘A TV that can change, change everything.
As this trademark was requested less than a month before the start of CES 2020, it is obvious that this slogan will be used by Samsung for the first time.
It could, of course, also be a microLED TV. Finally, these screens are modular, so that you can easily adjust the display size to your liking. However, the first microLED TV was already shown two years ago at CES, this year both a 75-inch and a 219-inch version were announced.
It is, therefore, more likely that Samsung refers to something else here. Since the Korean manufacturer had already shown a prototype of a TV that could be used both flat and curved five years ago at the same fair, it is quite possible that this time the TV has been sufficiently developed to make it available to consumers.
