Sony Corporation, Sony Music Entertainment, and Sony Global Education have just announced the development of a system that will apply blockchain technology to the development of the rights management system for digital content.
This new system lies on the previously developed system between Sony and Sony Global Education for authenticating, sharing, and rights management of educational data, and additionally features functionality for processing rights-related information.
Blockchains help in the validity of data; it creates networks where programs and information are difficult to destroy. It helps to provide services across finance, merchandise distribution management, and the sharing economy, and blockchains are expected to bring about even more innovative services in the future.
This newly-developed system is specialized for managing rights-related information of written works, with features for demonstrating the date and time that electronic data was created, leveraging the properties of blockchains to record verifiable information in a difficult to falsify way, and identifying previously recorded works, allowing participants to share and verify when a piece of electronic data was created and by whom.
This new system also helps to construct a foundation for new educational and learning services where multiple educational institutions will be able to make use of its data. Sony is now contemplating possible uses in a wide range of fields.
