Sony’s Mobile Division Continues to Record Losses

The bad news for the mobile divisions of large companies adds up and continues, and this time it is Sony that has bad news to communicate as its smartphone segment fails to rebound.

The XZ Premium, XZ1, and XZ1 Compact apparently could not be enough to generate stable income for the company, as the company has reported losses of about 22.1 million dollars in the quarter that has just ended.

The last report published by the company is, as usual, full of inequalities. While the PlayStation division, the one in charge of the development of image sensors, continues to excel with several billion yen of net profit for the company, the Sony Mobile division loses almost one million with respect to the same period of 2016.

For several years, the Japanese have been pushed several positions behind others such as Samsung, Apple or Huawei itself in the mobile sector. Although even today, there is a community of users loyal to Sony, the latest financial data reflect that the loyalty of its followers is not enough to keep a mobile division afloat that, quarter after quarter, continues to generate losses.

In the third quarter of 2017, the company would have stopped earning 22.1 million dollars, a figure that, despite being well below more than 300 million in losses of LG, it is still a worrying topic for the company.

Although no one doubts that at the technical level, Sony phones are up to the best in the market, the criticism against Japanese terminals is mainly focused on its physical section. And for years, the company has maintained its OmniBalance design lines, which debuted there in 2013 with the first generation Xperia Z.

However, Sony has already confirmed that its next generation of star terminals will be presented in 2018, and will adopt a design much more in line with the times, with smaller screen frames and new formats. It will be necessary to see if this change of strategy is enough to carry out the Xperia line, one of the most representative in the history of Android.
