Tesla China’s Model Y configurator for locally-produced variants of the all-electric crossover has gone live, yet again hinting that the company might start deliveries in China in 2021.

Tesla China’s official websites show that in China the company is now taking orders for local deliveries.

The company will soon start manufacturing two Model Y variants in China- the Long Range AWD and the Performance version. Although the company refrained from giving out an exact date when it will start production, Tesla had stated that 2021 is going to see the first production of the Model Y variant.

However, the locally produced vehicles are priced higher than their US counterparts. The Model Y Long Range AWD is priced at RMB 488,000, and the Model Y Performance is priced at RMB 535,000. In the US, the Model Y Long Range AWD and the Model Y Performance are priced at $52,990 and $60,990 respectively.

The fact that Tesla would not be sending any US-made Model Y units to China, it is likely that for China the company will make good use of its electric vehicle plant in the Lingang Industrial Zone.

The Model Y China version was inaugurated by Tesla CEO Elon Musk in January, and true to his promise, the Model Y will go into production in early 2021, if everything goes right. Since its announcement in January, the company is working hard to materialize its promise.

The Gigafactory complex, the Model Y facility’s construction site, has seen some serious changes and progress in recent months, even in the middle of the coronavirus outbreak. Tesla reported that the factory shell for the Model Y facility has been completed, as mentioned before, even right in the middle of the global pandemic. After production starts, it is not sure when the Model Y variants will go on sale in China.
