According to reports, the New York City Police Department is considering placing an order for as many as 250 fully electric Tesla Model 3 sedans. Apparently, the police agency will pay approximately USD 51,490 for each vehicle.

The option to order Tesla vehicles is part of the Force’s plan to push the entire police department into transitioning to an all-electric fleet. However, the city is yet to fully commit to the purchases. Moreover, reports have surfaced regarding the discussion over the purchase of the Tesla vehicles, which is to be held at a hearing on December 16. The contract with the company Tesla could be worth up to USD 12.4 million.

According to official numbers, the New York City Police Department is the largest police department in the US, with almost 36,000 uniformed officers. The department is in possession of almost 9000 vehicles. Of late, almost all government departments have been concerned with meeting climate goals. As such, local and federal governments are looking for ways to electrify their fleet of vehicles.

Moreover, electric cars are also expected to have lower maintenance costs and fuel savings compared to models equipped with more traditional internal combustion engines. If the contract is signed, and a deal between the New York City Police Department and Tesla is signed, it would signify a shift in vehicle sales in the law enforcement department.

Previously, Ford Motors was the biggest supplier of vehicles to both the local and federal law enforcement agencies. The police department in Fremont, California, has a Tesla Model S and a Model Y in its fleet.

The Fremont agency had mentioned previously that the agency was satisfied with the performance of the Model S. In a similar thread, the rental car company Hertz announced its plans to buy 100,000 Tesla cars last month.
