Twitter is almost on the verge of adopting a new feature that will give its users more freedom. Twitter’s interface now shows particular user recommendations based on their account activity and the kind of tweets they like.
Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey mentioned that the Twitter team might change how a user experiences the platform by giving the user some power to choose their own recommendations. Jack Dorsey imagined such a future where any users will be able to choose their favorite recommendation algorithm which, in turn, will let them choose what they see on social media. This means that the users need not rely on a single algorithm provided by the company.
Apparently, Dorsey expressed this idea over a conference call with investors, and further mentioned his wish to expand a decentralized social network operation. Dorsey allegedly also defended his proposal as to why Twitter should create a network that is not controlled by itself or any other company for that matter.
Dorsey mentioned that Twitter will immensely benefit from accessing a “larger corpus of dialogue” from which it can push relevant content to its users. Dorsey sees this new area as unexplored, where the social media platform could be competitive. Twitter will be more than happy to create some features that will allow its users to have more choices about what they see. Dorsey said in the conference call, “You can imagine a ranking algorithm view similar to an app store, giving people the ultimate flexibility in which posts to put in front of them.”
Twitter stated that it can either create its own ranking algorithm for people to choose from or provide a “market” for people to choose different algorithm options. He said, “This is not only something we can host, but we can also participate in it. This not only gives users more choices and helps companies but also encourages more people to participate in social media first.”
