It has been a long-standing debate on whether Twitter should increase its 140-character limits in tweets or not; certainly, the good news is waiting for users who favor long Tweets. A Bloomberg report shows that the social media site is planning to remove counting photos and links in 140-character limit giving users more freedom to compose longer messages.
Since Jack Dorsey took over the CEO position in the company, Twitter has made a major shift in the micro-blogging site. Earlier this year, Twitter redesigned its home page and increased the direct messaging limit and single sign-in feature for TweetDeck. In January 2016, Jack said the company is experimenting with new ways to display text on Twitter based on how people use the service.
The reported change could happen in the coming next “two weeks,” according to the person familiar with the matter. Earlier it was rumored Twitter is considering increasing the tweet character limit to 10000 characters, but the fact is the company has implemented it for direct messaging service. Since its inception in 2006, Twitter has maintained keeping tweet character limits to 140, including pictures and links like the mobile text message.
Currently, Twitter shortens URLs or uploads the image into a link that takes up 23 characters, i.e., nearly 17% of total tweet strengths. Removing the character requirement for links and photos may encourage users to add more media to their posts.
Twitter has a total of 320 million monthly active users worldwide, and since it has become a crucial medium, it will give users more control to share daily news, events, images, and more.
