On March 4, 2022, Volkswagen Group’s Supervisory Board passed resolutions for the construction of its new Trinity factory in Wolfsburg-Warmenau. The automobile maker will start the construction of the new facility in early 2023.

The USD 2 billion company will be dedicated to producing all-electric sports sedans from Volkswagen. The company has further revealed that they are expecting that the new facility can push out the assembly line by as early as 2026. The Trinity Sedan will provide Volkswagen with the imperative to push the company towards becoming a software-driven mobility provider. A report has claimed, “The all-electric sedan will also debut with VW’s highly scalable Scalable Systems Platform (SSP).”

Daniela Cavallo who is the Chairperson of the General and Group Works Councils mentioned in a statement, “Today’s decision marks a historic moment for Wolfsburg. The very roots of our company remain the Group’s powerhouse and become even more important.”

She further added, “The Trinity factory will become the blueprint for the existing main plant and for Volkswagen in general. We have also agreed that we will expand battery, charging and digitalization activities here in Wolfsburg, centered around Trinity. All this safeguards employment and brings coherence to shaping the transformation in Wolfsburg.”

The new Trinity facility which will be dedicated to manufacturing electronic vehicles will put Volkswagen in direct competition with the heavyweights in this domain, namely Tesla. Volkswagen’s Chairman Herbert Diess is positive that Trinity will be competing against Tesla’s Gigafactory Berlin.

Diess admitted that he is sure that Tesla’s Giga Berlin factory would produce Tesla’s speciality vehicles at an “impressive speed”. Recently, the said factory also received environmental approval but the factory still has to undergo a few provisions before it can start operating. Once the factory gets all the prerequisite permissions, Tesla will begin the production of its Model Y at the Giga Berlin.
