There are tons of hoaxes continually doing the rounds on Twitter, and now, a new Twitter prank is going viral. The new prank suggests that if you change your birthday to 2007, the year Twitter launched, it will enable users to unlock all new features, including a new color scheme, get cash, get admin privileges on the platform, or even get yourself a coveted blue verified check mark.
But little do the users know that doing so it will actually get you booted from Twitter for being underage. You need to be at least 13 years old to get a Twitter account. If you were born in 2007, then you would only be 12, a year too young to be allowed an account.
The viral prank seems to stem from a tweet posted Monday night, which has since gained almost 12,000 retweets and nearly 20,000 likes. Unfortunately, there’s no colorful Twitter feed. Instead, following these instructions will lock you out of your account. There’s no estimate of how many people have already fallen for the prank, but it’s apparently enough for Twitter to warn users about the hoax.
This sort of viral prank is easy to fall for, especially when some social networks lure you into jumping through several hoops to unlock hidden features. However, Twitter has warned people not to fall for the hoax. If you’ve unfortunately fallen prey to this scam, follow the instructions in the company’s email to regain access.
