Facebook has confirmed that going forward, the company would not re-manufacture the stock of the PC-only Oculus Rift S VR headset. Facebook is moving on from manufacturing the VR headset probably because the social media giant wants to move forward with new VR headsets.

However, users can still get their hands on them in some online stores. The Oculus Rift S VR headset started its journey as far back as five years ago. As of now, the VR sets cannot be found listed on its official websites, neither can they be purchased on Amazon.

The Rift S was manufactured by Lenovo, and the company started shipping them in 2019 at the price of $399. The company had also launched the original standalone Quest alongside the Rift S. The Rift S replaced the original Rift which was launched back in 2016.

To the new Quest, Facebook added a USB-powered PC mode. However, over the years, the developers at Facebook had focused more on adding new features to that system instead of working on the PC-only Rift S. Quest 2, which started selling in late 2020 at the price of $299. In less than six months, the VR set sales were higher than that of the previous Facebook VR.

“Rift S is still available for sale currently in some channels around the world, but as we announced last year, we plan to stop selling Rift S in 2021,” a Facebook representative mentioned, “Generally speaking, as channels sell out of stock, they won’t be replenished moving forward.”

The sales statistic perhaps pushed Facebook to discontinue the PC-only Oculus Rift S VR headset. On the other hand, Facebook has reasons to believe that Quest 2 will become the first mainstream VR headset, especially with new features to the VR headset.
