Motorola officially unveiled the Space Charging Technology on September 8, 2021. Motorola first introduced the technology in January of this year. The demonstration showed how relying on a desktop millimeter-wave transmitter charging technology could charge devices within its 80-100 cm distance. Moreover, the company also announced that its range could be expanded up to 3 meters.
Motorola’s Space Charging technology does not require a wire but uses 1600 antennas composed of a phased array. The company also claims that this technology can charge up to 4 devices simultaneously. At the launch event, Motorola also unveiled a demonstration video. The video shows that the technology can detect devices on its own, trigger a charging process, and can also support more than 3 meters of handheld charging across a space. A report has claimed, “Officially, Motorola’s new generation of space charging technology has achieved the effect of charging 4 devices simultaneously within 3 meters and 100° of a single device and can charge the phone through paper, leather, and other obstructions.”
The smartphone manufacturer has also taken safety measures with this technology. Within the space-charging device, the company has built biomonitoring technology that actively avoids charging the beam of the blocking part after it detects a human body.
The technology is very new, and there is room for improvement. Motorola has said that they will, in the future, work to not only improve the hardware parameter index of space charging but also include some new features, including AI intelligent frequency modulation, multi-device networking, etc. The space-charging device will be compatible with Qi wireless charging protocol.
The General Manager of Lenovo China Mobile Phone Business Department also said that the technology is very close to being commercialized. However, Motorola has not announced any more information about space charging technology. Moreover, no information is available on when the device will be mass-produced.
