Over the years, Amazon Web Services, AWS, and Intel have had a long-standing partnership in introducing new opportunities and technologies that power AWS innovation. As the AWS re: Invent kicks off this week in Las Vegas, the duo firms have announced new opportunities in the technology sphere.

The AWS re: Invent is a weeklong cloud computing conference featuring a series of keynotes, leadership sessions, technical discussions, and more. Now, let’s take a look at the new technology opportunities through Intel’s partnership with AWS.

Announcing Amazon EC2 R7iz Instances Powered by Intel Xeon

The exclusive preview of Amazon EC2 R7iz instances, powered by 4th Gen Intel® Xeon® Scalable processors, is one of the biggest announcements made at re: Invent. Customers can better support and manage workloads thanks to the memory-optimized high-frequency scalable platform. Starting today, memory-optimized, high-frequency Amazon EC2 R7iz instances are available in preview.

These instances give up to 20% more performance than z1d instances and have the highest performance per vCPU among x86-based EC2 instances. The AWS Nitro System, which combines specialized hardware with a lightweight hypervisor to distribute nearly all of the host hardware’s computation and memory capabilities to your instances for improved overall speed and security, is the foundation around which the instances are built.

R7iz instances come in various sizes, including two bare metal versions with up to 128 vCPUs and up to 1,024GiB of memory, for improved memory and scalability. R7iz instances offer up to 2.4 times more memory bandwidth than comparable high-frequency instances and are the first x86-based EC2 instances that utilize DDR5 memory. Additionally, they provide 40 Gbps of Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS) bandwidth and networking speeds of up to 50 Gbps.

Switching to Cloud Telecom

Cloud and edge computing allow scalability, flexibility, and programmability to optimize workloads and lower the total cost of ownership as communication service providers attempt to develop next-generation networks.

Amazon Web Services, AWS, and Intel have started an initiative to assist telecommunications firms in switching to cloud-native solutions to support adoption and migration. Elastic Kubernetes Service Anywhere and open-source projects will both be certified by the platform, which is based on Xeon Scalable processors.

Hastening Private 5G Networks

AWS and Intel also discussed their efforts to hasten the industry’s deployment of private 5G networks. The collaboration enables enterprise organizations to customize their networks by their distinct security, connectivity, and scale requirements through global 5G experience centers, end-to-end solutions, and shared marketing incentives.
