In the new safety report, released by Tesla, there has been diminutive improvements in miles between Autopilot crashes. The automaker released this report for Q2 2024 with data pertinent to crashes that have occurred reporting its safety features.
The report stated that Tesla has recorded one crash out of 6.88 million miles driven in which drivers were using the Autopilot mode of driving. Drivers, who were not using the Autopilot mode, were more susceptible to crashes resulting in one crash for every 1.45 million miles driven.
Approximately from the data provided by relevant sources like NHSTA and FHWA encapsulates that there was an automobile crash approximately every 670,000 miles, in 2022. An overall decrement is being observed in miles between crashes quarter- over-quarter.
However it is indeed better to observe this data with a year- over-year approach considering the fact that accidents occur depending on the season of the year. Observing from a year-over-year approach, Tesla has potrayed slight improvement in its Autopilot technology. They have also provided data pertinent to their claims of improvement. However the data fails to include Full Self-Driving automobiles. However it seems to be obscure since currently Tesla is using the same software stacks with restricted functionalities for Autopilot.
Tesla has been releasing this particular safety report titles ‘Vehicle safety report” whose purpose is to track miles between accidents in the vehicles on the basis of the usage of the Autopilot technology. The automaker has claimed that the Autopilot technology has substantially improved and has resulted in a smoother as well as relatively safer experience. The report has also mentioned that Tesla vehicles would crash much less often in comparison to its other competitors in the market, even without the feature of Autopilot.
This has always been an overall theme of these reports. The data used to frame these reports, has however been limited and vehemently criticized for not including the fact that accidents are more common in the city roads as well as roads which are not divided. The data usually prioritizes the feature of Autopilot being used on highways.
This was the only category of data that Tesla had permitted to release, which was therefore being used to track meaningful progress. However, Tesla all of a sudden stopped the reports after Q4 2022, without relegating any proper reason. The report system has been started from this year again.
Since there is a clear limitation of data, it becomes harder to track the
progress in a reliable manner specifically for Full- Self Driving Automobiles.
