The BMW iDrive celebrates its 20 years at the CES 2021. Simultaneously, the automobile maker announced its next chapter in the display and operating system, which will work towards transporting the driver-vehicle interaction into a new digital and intelligent age.

The CES is supposed to occur from 11th January through to 14th January 2021 in exclusively digital form.

The BMW iX will be the vehicle to usher in a new era for BMW, in which the new-gen display and OS will be available to experience. 20 years ago the BMW iDrive made its debut on the BMW 7 series.

The multifunctional system replaced the usage of multiple buttons and decluttered, in a way, the cockpit. The iDrive controller and voice control made operating the car’s systems easier and safer. The Control Display, in a way, revolutionized the way people experience driving in a car.

Over the years, this principle morphed into something new entirely, and since then, BMW has taken the lead in intuitive in-car operation. 2015 brought the arrival of the Control Display with touch control, again in the BMW 7 Series.

In 2004, the company became the first carmaker to come with a Head-Up display that projected relevant driving information. In 2015 the BMW Gesture Control made its debut in the 7 series.

Since 2015 natural language understanding has enabled systems to be operated using naturally spoken instructions instead of pre-setting commands.

BMW iDrive also showed the way for digital services to operate within the car. In 2007, the company integrated Google search, and it became the first company to offer unlimited in-car internet access in 2008.

In 2016, the BMW Connected app allowed its users to integrate their car fully into the digital lifestyle. This service since then has been broadened, and now it offers a wide range of functionality through My BMW app.

In 2008, the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant was launched, taking digital integration even further. The next generation of the BMW iDrive will take the relationship between the car and its driver to a whole new level, blurring the line between analog and digital technology.

Driving and parking could be automated even further, and the same would happen to cloud-based services, giving the machine access to more data than its users, in many cases.

It can receive and display hazard warnings from other BMW vehicles and make predictions on parking spaces’ availability at a destination. The next generation of BMW cars will make the driving experience safer and more comfortable for its users.
