Google Cloud is offering two new features for its Cloud Storage system: Filestore Enterprise for protection from zonal outages and Backup for Google Kubernetes Engine or simply GKE so that the data can be protected in containers.
Google is also introducing the Turbo Replication for dual-region buckets. Now using the GKE service, Google users can protect, manage and restore data in more manageable ways. “Customers tell us they wish it were easier to get the right level of protection for their data,” Guru Pangal, Google Cloud’s vice president and general manager of storage, and Brian Schwarz, director of product management, wrote in a blog post, “that can be hard to do, whether your data is on-premises or in the cloud. For example, configuring synchronous replication on-prem for a tier-one application requires you to set up, manage and monitor both networking and storage.
Additionally, many organizations struggle to extend the standard protection policies they have in place for VMs [virtual machines] to container infrastructure.”
Previously, users had to manually back up the stateful application data separately from the GKE cluster state data. The users needed to use a custom script to retrieve and store the data in a separate storage bucket for cluster state data. Moreover, they also needed to meet the regulatory requirements so that they could perform backups. Additionally, this whole process required more manpower and time. Now with the new GKE backup plan, the users can manage data at the container level. GKE also allows the user to customize the backup so that consistency of database workload can be maintained all through.
Google also announced that in the future it will launch a new feature for the GKE which will let its users custom select region for the dual-region buckets so that they can meet the regulatory and compliance requirements.
